The footage was recorded on the Stromboli volcano. You see 23 uncut minutes. From another camera angle, you can observe lava flowing down into the sea via the Sciara del Fuoco—that’s the name of Stromboli’s northwestern flank. Over the course of these 23 minutes, you can see how the outgassing becomes increasingly intense and how the volcanic activity grows stronger. The danger posed by the released gases is significantly heightened. When a volcano becomes more active, emissions of toxic gases such as sulfur dioxide and carbon monoxide rise, leading to an increased health risk for people in the surrounding area. Various volcanic gases are released at Stromboli that can potentially harm human health. The most important of these include: Sulfur Dioxide (SO₂): This gas is particularly dangerous because it can cause respiratory problems and, in high concentrations, lead to irritation of the airways. Carbon Dioxide (CO₂): Although it occurs naturally in the atmosphere, it can be hazardous in high concentrations because it displaces oxygen and can lead to a risk of suffocation. Carbon Monoxide (CO): A toxic gas produced by incomplete combustion. Inhalation can cause serious health problems. Water Vapor (H₂O): While water vapor itself is not directly harmful, it can increase humidity in combination with other gases and heighten the risk of respiratory conditions. The combination of these gases can significantly impair air quality and poses a risk to health. Stromboli is also known to be capable of larger, more explosive eruptions.
