The family of Dominants is derived from a diminished chord. This powerful theory impacted my playing so much that I had to make this video. Also because I agree with those who say that many modern jazz guitarists sound like Pat Metheny or Allan Holdsworth. Even Pat Metheny himself admits this (in his Rick Beato interview). There’s nothing wrong with modal interchange—it can be beautiful—but it has taken up a lot of our time recently. There’s a different theory that can help you actually find your own voice and your own way of playing. It’s both limitless and timeless. Barry Harris’ approach is having a real impact on contemporary players. All of a sudden, you can hear it everywhere, and anyone can implement and embellish it in their own creative way. I honestly believe we’re in the middle of a jazz renaissance driven by Barry Harris' ideas—so empowering that it will have a huge positive impact on music in general... once again. What do you think?
