Days before she was killed, David Bains sister Laniet said she was going home to "blow the whistle" on her father and being a sex worker, the High Court in Christchurch was told today. A woman, whose name is suppressed, told the David Bain trial she lived in Dunedin in a boarding house with Laniet Bain in Christmas 1993. They became very close and she discovered Laniet was a sex worker. Laniet said her parents would not sign the form needed for a youth benefit and said she was raped in Papua New Guinea and had a child, the father being a family friend. A photograph of the baby showed it was white and had Laniets hair. She had seen Laniet naked and noticed stretch marks on her stomach. Laniet had stopped being a sex worker and got a job at the museum café. Laniet used a cellphone which belonged to a man called Dean Cottle. Her relationship with him was unclear but because she had his phone, she had to have sex with him. She didnt like it because of what he had her doing. She told me he was blackmailing her with the knowledge of her being a sex worker. She met Laniet a few days before her death in the Octagon in Dunedin. It was the Thursday before the murders and they had talked for about half an hour. Laniet told her she was going home (to Every Street) that weekend to blow the whistle that she was a sex worker and that she was having an incestuous relationship with her father. She had already told her about having sex with her father but never specified how many times it occurred. The woman said she was interviewed by police and was told she was going to be a witness but she received a letter saying her details would be passed to the defence team. To questions from the Crown, the woman said Laniet was a heavy user of cannabis and she wondered why Laniet was smoking so much. Cottle required her to have sex with him once a week and made her do horrible and graphic things, Laniet had told her. She would get wasted on cannabis before she would go to see him. She craved affection and friendship and needed to know someone cared. She talked of not being supported by her parents either financially or emotionally, the woman said. Laniet told her she was raped and had the baby when she was 10-years-old. She was surprised about Laniet living with her father at Taieri Mouth because she had said she did not want to be with her father. At the meeting just before her death, Laniet was happy not to be a sex worker and was nervous about facing the whole family. Laniet had said David also wanted to see the whole family at the weekend before the killings but she did not know why.
