Bangalore’s ‘awesome weather’ failed to stop companies from packing up and moving to Hyderabad, the new IT hotspot. But how long before Hyderabad turns into the next Bangalore? There is a pattern here. In the ’80s, Bangalore was a 'Garden City' with just 30 lakh people and around 3 lakh vehicles. Then IT giants like Texas Instruments arrived, and by 1996, hubs like Valliappa Software Park fuelled the tech boom. By the 2000s, the population doubled to 55 lakh people. Now in 2025, with 1.4 crore people and a 6000% increase in the number of vehicles, it’s all bad air, scarce water and sky-high rents in Bangalore. Now Hyderabad is the new darling with better roads, lower costs, and the government making it easy for companies to set up shop. But the city is already growing rapidly. In 2025, Hyderabad is at 11 million people and over 80 lakh vehicles, with IT hubs like HITEC City pulling in more daily. Give it a few years, and this boom could bring expensive rents, traffic jams, and overloaded infrastructure —just like it did in Bangalore. But here's the thing. The problem is not any one city. It’s that everything is concentrated in just a few metro cities. Instead of just moving from one metro to another, we need to spread out opportunities. Investing in tier-2 and tier-3 cities like Nagpur, Jaipur, Coimbatore, Guwahati for better infrastructure, good colleges, and business-friendly policies is the way forward. Take Nagpur for example— its MIHAN project already has an IT park and metro, ready to ease the load on big cities. The benefits of such moves will be huge. Less pressure on a handful of cities, more job opportunities across India, and young professionals will not have to leave their hometowns for work. Now the question is — Will Hyderabad's future be any different than Bangalore?
