The Wabash, St. Louis and Pacific Railway Company was accused of charging unfair rates for transporting freight in Illinois. The Supreme Court of Illinois ruled that the state law did not apply to transportation that went beyond Illinois. The case was appealed to the Supreme Court of the United States, which held that transportation that involves multiple states is considered "commerce among the States" and can only be regulated by Congress.
