The 1988 Dunk Contest in Chicago, an epic moment in NBA history, when Michael Jordan once again jumped from the free throw line for the clutch dunk, earning a 50 from the judges. The results of that dunk contest were immediately contested by Dominique Wilkins, and he stated that he would never compete in a dunk contest again. He felt he was robbed. Dominique was mad. Dominique proceeded to average 41.7ppg on 49% shooting after the All-Star break, leading in to this rematch between the finalists of the dunk contest, Michael Jordan vs Dominique Wilkins. For Michael Jordan, he was trying to develop his young teammates, Scottie Pippen & Horace Grant, because Michael was attempting to build a champion. He wanted what Larry & Magic had. He wanted that championship validation. He wanted to win. Michael also won the All-Star game MVP award as well 1 week prior, so it was a very special, fun & memorable time to be a Bulls fan. Dominique Wilkins had his Atlanta Hawks once again in first place, so this was a huge match-up for the Bulls. Michael Jordan & Dominique Wilkins were always competitive, but with Dominique Wilkins upset over the results of the dunk contest, all eyes were on this Jordan vs Wilkins game just one week later. Also of note in this game, one of the biggest "draft busts" of all time, Chris Washburn appeared for the Atlanta Hawks. He had a ton of potential, but he checked in to a rehabilitation clinic with a cocaine problem, and failed three drug tests in three years. His pro career never materialized.
