Looking for some answers, Kyle and I went to Trinity Reformed Church to get Pastor Van Eyk's thoughts on the subject. This is Faith to Film. 0:25 What is the Omniscience of God? When we speak about God's omniscience, we are thinking of the absolute knowledge of all things that God has. Not only does He know all things that exist, or have existed, or will exist, but He also has perfect knowledge of what could have existed, all possibilities as well because His knowledge is vast and without limit. There's no creature in all creation that is hidden to God. Everything is, as the writer to the Hebrews says in Hebrews 4 everything is exposed and naked before the eyes of the one to whom we must all give account. God knows all things. He knows the end from the beginning. There are no surprises to God. He doesn't learn things. He doesn't increase in knowledge. He knows all things perfectly all the time. 1:13 Is anyone besides God omniscient? No. Only God is omniscient because only God has boundless infinity. The rest of us are finite because we're created beings and so there are limitations to our knowledge. I read the newspaper and I learn what has happened in another part of the world. I read books and I discover new things, things I did not know before. That's never the way it is with God because He's infinite. It's always the way it is with us because we are creatures and we are limited. In fact, even our Lord Jesus Christ who is God, in His humanity was ignorant of things. Remember how He said that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only. The incarnation of the Lord Jesus shared in our humanity, and therefore He also shared in our limitations of knowledge. 2:13 How does God's omniscience affect us? I think that if people lived with the awareness of the omniscience of God that they would live differently. That's certainly true of unbelievers. They think that God does not see or that God does not hear what they're doing but He's aware of everything because He's all knowing. So, He sees their rebellion, He observes their wickedness and for them that means that God, when He comes to them in judgement, He will come with all the evidence before Him. There's nothing that can be hidden from Him. So, that's a bit of a frightening and terrifying thing and like I said, if the unbeliever knew that, he would be quicker to make amends and to be reconciled to this God. Believers sometimes have a fear of God too, that He knows all things. And I think I understand that. There are things within us, the secrets of our hearts that we are ashamed of that we don't want anyone to know, not even God himself to know. But I think it's helpful to know that the God who knows us completely, is a heavenly Father who has been reconciled to us through the death of His Son and He loves us. When you think of that, that the Lord knows everything about me, it actually is quite refreshing and encouraging. He knows my struggles and therefore He is able to administer grace to me in my time of need. He knows the intentions of my heart so that sometimes, often, I don't live the way I ought to live. But the Lord knows the desires of my heart, He knows that my longing is to be like Christ and to please Him in every way and that just gives me great comfort to know that the father knows, and he knows, and He uses His complete and perfect knowledge of me, never to harm me but always to bless me because of His commitment to do me good.
