The pilgrimage is the longest in Taiwan, and this year it has more than 320,000 participants. The procession started late night on Thursday in Miaoli, and is currently on its way to Beigang, more than 100km away. The Baishatun Mazu Pilgrimage set off late at night on Thursday. Outside the temple, there are hordes of worshippers. They lift up their hands to reach Mazu’s sedan, and get a hint of divinity. They also take videos on their phones as the goddess is paraded out. The 10-day pilgrimage has record attendance, with more than 320,000 people registering to take part. But amid the excitement, there were also awkward moments. Yunlin Commissioner Chang Li-shan leans toward Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen. It seems Chang wants to get a better angle for the cameras, and so she nudges the person in front of her to the side. But that person is the censer master, the head of the ceremony. The faux pas has become a hot topic of debate, with many criticizing Chang as trying to steal the limelight. Chang Li-shan Yunlin commissioner It’s because there were people asking me to take a picture with Lu Shiow-yen and Chung Tung-chin. So it’s a bit awkward. It wasn’t intentional, it was just a mistake. The procession departed at top speed, rushing through Tongxiao and reaching the coast of Taichung in the morning. Worshippers followed in an orderly way along Provincial Highway No. 61, making stops to snack, drink, and take a break. Some pilgrims will be joining the procession in its entirety and have come prepared with electric bikes, tents and mats. Pilgrim Everyone is here for different reasons. But everyone is here for Mazu. We all have a spiritual connection with Mazu. Pilgrim I trained by walking around race tracks. I kept telling myself to go and walk. The procession has an intense journey ahead. They are expected to cover more than 100km in just about 36 hours to reach Beigang on Saturday.
