This is a short video of clips from the May 3, 1970 Stanley Cup Finals Game 1 between the Boston Bruins and the Blues at St. Louis Arena, won by Boston, 6-1. In the second period, Boston's Fred Stanfield blasted a slap shot, tipped by Phil Esposito, that hit St. Louis goalie Jacques Plante in the mask, knocking him out of the game and the series. The play by play call is from St. Louis radio or TV, with an update on Plante's condition from analyst Bill Mazer on the CBS broadcast. The final replay comes from the NHL's Stanley Cup 1970 video, narrated by Dan Kelly. Notes: Plante had been playing well, but in no way do I think the result of the series would have changed had he gone the route. The Bruins had way too many horses, including Secretariat (Bobby Orr) ... Stanfield had a booming slapper, but the way he was able to walk into this one made it possibly his greatest ... I'm assuming Glenn Hall wasn't dressed for the game, as the Blues replaced Plante with young Ernie Wakely. Why they didn't go with Hall in Game 2 is beyond me. Copyright NHL or any other party. I don't claim the rights to, and don't profit from, this video. I just posted it for historical and educational purposes, and for those who will enjoy it as much as I did.
