The Dark History of Colorado’s Railroads (And the Man Who Almost Bankrupted the State) takes you deep into one of the most intense, high-stakes battles in Colorado’s past. At the center of this story is Jay Gould, a ruthless railroad magnate whose control over Union Pacific Railroad sparked fierce competition and economic chaos. His aggressive expansion tactics, stock manipulations, and relentless drive to dominate Colorado’s rail system left a lasting mark on the state’s history — nearly bankrupting it in the process. In this video, we trace the rise of Colorado’s railroads, beginning with the Denver Pacific Railroad’s race to connect Denver to the Transcontinental Railroad in the 1860s. When the first transcontinental line bypassed Denver in favor of Cheyenne, Denver leaders scrambled to build a connection, changing the future of the city forever. This fight for connectivity ignited a series of rivalries — most famously the battle between Denver and Golden for rail dominance. Golden was initially poised to become Colorado’s rail hub, but Denver’s aggressive expansion and political maneuvering ultimately secured its future as the state’s economic center. These rivalries continued for decades, especially between the Rio Grande and Santa Fe railroads, erupting into legal battles, competitive construction races through canyons, and even armed conflicts like the Raton Pass war. These clashes determined which towns thrived, which were abandoned, and how railroads dictated the rise and fall of fortunes across Colorado. We also explore the broader economic and social impact of these railroads. Entire Colorado towns rose and fell based on rail access. Mining booms in Leadville, Pueblo, and other mountain regions depended on these lines, while agriculture and trade across the Front Range shifted overnight with new routes. The railroads didn’t just shape transportation — they dictated political power, land ownership, and the flow of wealth in the West. To capture this history visually, we visited the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden, Colorado. This museum preserves original locomotives, passenger cars, and freight equipment from the 19th and early 20th centuries, offering a hands-on glimpse into the golden (and often brutal) age of rail. Walking the museum grounds, it’s easy to imagine the relentless pace of track-laying crews, the roar of steam engines, and the economic stakes riding on every mile of steel.
