By the 1991 Eastern Conference Finals, the tide had turned in the rivalry between the Detroit Pistons and Chicago Bulls. While the Pistons were battling adversity and age, the Bulls were busy winning 61 regular season games while chasing their very first NBA Finals appearance. Alas, the bad blood between both clubs persisted, including a mid-series storyline that involved Pistons forward Mark Aguirre allegedly challenging Scottie Pippen to a fight in the parking lot following Game 2. The two never met, though a war of words commenced as a result. As an aside, Pat Riley worked with NBC as an analyst in the network's inaugural season of NBA coverage. Riley stepped down as head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers in 1990 and, after a one year respite with NBC, returned to the sidelines for the 1991-92 season as head coach of the New York Knicks.
