I've seen this video requested a few times in the comments, so here it is! A comprehensive look at internal vs external recordings with the Canon C100 mark ii MP4 vs Atomos Ninja Inferno Prores LT files. Whilst the C100 can only output an 8 bit signal, the Atomos does give you less chroma subsampling, and a much higher bit rate. If you're considering buying an external recorder for your C100 but you're not sure if it's worth it, then I hope this video will be helpful! I should note that some of the files in this video come from my first recorder: an Atomos Ninja Blade 2. Although that has little impact on the video as whilst the monitoring aspects of the 2 recorders are very different, they both record prores in the same way.
