(17 Oct 2017) Thousands of women have been sharing their stories of rape, sexual assault and harassment on social media in the wake of Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein's downfall over allegations of sexual misconduct spanning decades. The testimonies were followed, in many cases, by harsh reactions on social media by those who blamed the victims rather than the suspected perpetrators. In Italy, the hashtag #quellavoltache, which in English means "that time when", quickly trended on social media. The campaign was launched by Italian writer and journalist Giulia Blasi and her friends and colleagues and quickly gathered thousands of moving testimonies. In an interview with the AP, she said the aim of the campaign was "to give voice to the victims" and "to remove the guilt" they might feel after breaking their silence and sharing their experiences. Similar campaigns have gone viral in English and French , under different hashtags: #metoo, #denoncetonporc (denounce the pigs). Blasi also spoke about the case of Asia Argento, an Italian film actress and director. Argento is among the women who have recently come forward with accusations of sexual assault against Weinstein. Argento supported the #quellavoltache campaign on Twitter. Dozens of women have made allegations of sexual harassment and assault against the movie mogul in recent days, some dating back decades. Weinstein denies non-consensual sexual activity. Testimonials of actresses such as Kate Beckinsale, Gwyneth Paltrow, Mira Sorvino, Ashley Judd, Rose McGowan and many more have prompted a public examination of one of the industry's oldest problems - its mistreatment of women.
