What should you do? This video explains the process for asking your landlord to make repairs, and how to get help if he or she refuses. This video answers questions such as, “What can I do about a slumlord? Should I withhold rent for repairs? Can I sue my landlord? Can I report my landlord to the health department? What is my landlord responsible to fix?” For the best chance of getting repairs made and avoiding an eviction, follow these four steps: 1) Always Pay Your Rent 2) Tell Your Landlord about the Problem 3) Call the City inspector or Local Health Department 4) Look into other options if these don't work, such as making a written agreement to lower rent, ending your lease early, or suing your landlord. Try to get legal advice about your options. It is very important that you always keep evidence that will protect you if your landlord files a lawsuit to evict you. These may include receipts from your rent payments, signed copies of all letters and agreements with your landlord, pictures of the problem conditions in your home, and a report on code violations in your home from the health department.
