The Western Wall Tunnels extend for about 488 meters, running along the full length of the Western retaining wall of the Temple Mount—most of which remains underground. Historical Background In 19 BCE, King Herod launched a grand renovation of the Second Temple, expanding the Temple Mount by building massive retaining walls. After the Temple's destruction in 70 CE, most of these structures were buried under centuries of construction and development. Only a small 60-meter section of the Western Wall remained visible and accessible for prayer. Exploration of the hidden sections began in the 19th century, and after the reunification of Jerusalem in 1967, extensive excavations revealed the full length of the wall and its surrounding structures. Highlights of the Tunnels The Western Stone: One of the largest building blocks in the world, measuring about 13.6 meters long and weighing an estimated 250–570 tons—an engineering marvel from antiquity. Warren’s Gate: A sealed ancient gate once used as a synagogue during the early Islamic period. Located closest to where the Holy of Holies once stood. Hasmonean Channel: An ancient water tunnel that carried water to the Temple Mount and still passes through the Struthion Pool today. Chain of Generations Center: Located near the tunnel entrance, this unique museum uses glass sculptures and multimedia to tell the story of the Jewish people across generations. Access and Legacy Originally, visitors had to exit the way they came in. In the 1990s, a new exit was opened near the Via Dolorosa, which led to significant unrest at the time.
