The Faderfox EC4 is a powerful yet compact MIDI controller that has the one thing missing most on the Deluge; a screen! In this video I show how I pair up the EC4 with the Deluge to control parameters on multiple tracks as I play. Using the EC4 really opens up the Deluge as you can tweak sounds live as you play across multiple tracks at once. The EC4 is MIDI hosted directly to the Deluge using a USB type B to B cable which I bought from Synthstrom. Alternatively you can use a type A to B converter plug which I link down below. You need to power the Deluge so it can host the EC4; I use a USB to 9V power adapter cable from Birdcord connected to a regular USB power bank. I made a simple song on the Deluge using synths samples and some drums for this demo. The EC4 has 16 rotary encoder knobs, which also act as push buttons. It stores 16 ‘setups’ and each setup can contain 16 ‘groups’ of knobs. And each group has 16 knobs. I use one setup per instrument; I’ve a setup for the Deluge, another for Digitone etc. Each group represents a function; one group for Volume, one for Reverb and so on. For each track on the Deluge I map the Volume, Reverb, Delay and filter settings to a group of knobs on the EC4. An alternate way of configuring the EC4 is to have a setup per song, with groups mapped to intro, chorus, verse, break etc. Configuring the EC4 is easy on the device itself, but if you have a lot of changes to make Faderfox provide a web-based editor that allows for fast editing of the knob assignments. You can also save and load configurations directly from your PC. I configure the push-button feature to send Note On/Off information to the Deluge. This can be learned to the track launch pad so you can arm and launch clips directly from the EC4.
