In this video from OMG Revision, we will be looking at the coastal management (hard and soft engineering strategies) that have been put in place to protect the coastal town of Lyme Regis in the South of England. Lyme Regis is a popular coastal town that attracts tourists from all around the world, however the cliffs are unstable and constantly being eroded by powerful destructive waves that develop over the Atlantic Ocean. As a result, coastal management strategies such as sea walls, groynes, rock armour and beach nourishment has been put in place to protect the coastline. There are 4 phases of coastal management in Lyme Regis (although Stage 3 never actually happened) and you need to be aware of what was done, when it was done, how much it cost and how effective it was. In addition, you need to understand the potential conflicts that can take place in Lyme Regis. For example, how do local people feel about tourists? Do they get annoyed at the extra traffic on the small roads? What about the added noise pollution and potential littering? Do local residents like the coastal management strategies or do they think it spoils the natural look of the coastal landscape?
