Irish immigration to Montreal can date as far back as the late 1600s, with the largest migration period beginning in the 1820s and lasting until the peak of the Great Potato Famine in 1847, when the city's first Irish Catholic church was completed: Saint-Patrick's Basilica. The building is a Gothic Revival jewel, considered one of the most magnificent examples of its kind in North America and a National Historic Site of Canada. With its spectacular marble-covered pine columns, exquisitely detailed altar and historical markers that tell the stories of Irish Montrealers, the church remains the heart of Irish Montreal and a beautiful piece of Montreal history.
