In this video we visit Hoppers Crossing, the penultimate station on the Werribee Line in Melbourne's south west. The station was recently upgraded in conjunction with the grade separation of the Old Geelong Road level crossing in late 2021. This involved the construction of a new pedestrian footbridge to replace the previous at-grade pedestrian crossing, new landscaping and public open spaces, a new northern bus interchange, kiss & ride facilities and public toilets. The upgrade was largely centred around the footbridge with the existing train platforms and bus interchange retained as is. The new footbridge opened in February 2022 with the project being fully completed by June 2022. We start the video on the train station platform where we see Metro trains arrive and depart the station, before moving onto the footbridge to check out some of the new vantage points to see trains. Throughout the video we see a good variety of Comeng, Siemens, and X'trapolis trains. We then head off to the new bus interchange where we see some CDC Melbourne (Wyndham) buses, before returning to the older bus interchange to see more buses. Buses seen include Volvo B12BLE's, Scania L94UB's, Scania K230UB's, a couple of Volvo B7RLE's, and some Volvo B5LH Hybrids. The new footbridge has proved to be fairly popular with train enthusiasts as it offers new vantage points to photograph/film trains at Hoppers Crossing that you couldn't get before, which I certainly take advantage of while filming for this video. Overall though I dislike the footbridge because it's drastically increased the amount of time it takes to transfer between train & bus services. The footbridge was built far away from the existing and bus interchange on the other side of the old level crossing to minimise disruption during construction, with the train platforms linked to the footbridge using a walkway. As a result though it takes over 2 minutes to transfer between different modes. Good public transport practice seeks to minimise the transfer times between different modes as much as possible to provide seamless and easy connections, and good train station design is essential in achieving this. In the case of Hoppers Crossing though this hasn't been done.
