Most Elvis fans are aware how the 50's hits evolved whilst performed on stage by Elvis throughout the 70's. Most of the time they were used as throwaways for Elvis to catch his breath or to hand out scarves. After his return to the stage in July 1969 however, they were mostly sang with complete commitment and none more so than during his first two Las Vegas engagements and the first six shows of his third, as well as the short Houston Astrodome stint sandwiched between his two 1970 Las Vegas engagements. After principal filming of That's The Way It Is ceased after his 13 August Dinner Show, most of the songs in question began to be sung at a faster tempo and were of a shorter duration. One example of such is 'Blue Suede Shoes' with the version from 12 August 1970 Midnight show. immortalised forever in the final TTWII movie, being the last to feature a guitar break, and probably the last completely committed performance of the song by Elvis. Six months earlier though, the early hits were still receiving the 'full treatment' and this gem was performed on Vegas opening night, January 26, 1970, which seems even better than the original, which works best in the context of the movie Loving You. As and example of the full commitment just listen for the growling in his voice when he sings 'Yeah just put a chain around my neck'! in this first 1970's live rendition of the song. Although Elvis' setlist from August 69 was heavily weighted with hits from the 50's, 'Teddy Bear' was not included and this therefore was the first time Elvis performed it after returning the stage in 69. The second part of this medley"Don't Be Cruel" was included in his setlist the previous August and this version is also excellent.
