"Zu neuen Ufern" (English title : To New Shores) was Zarah Leander's first movie for UFA. This melodrama directed by Douglas Sirk (as Detlef Sierck) about an English singer who is sent to Parramatta in Australia for a crime she did not commit proved to be a hit with audiences and established Leander as a star. The music was composed by Ralph Benatzky and the songs "Yes Sir", "Ich steh' im Regen" (Lit. I'm standing in the rain) and "Tiefe Sehnsucht" (Lit. Deep Longing) became Zarah Leander evergreens. Ralph Benaztky had also composed the operetta "Axel and der Himmelstür" (Lit. Axel at heaven's gates) which had made Leander an overnight sensation in Vienna in 1936. Today's video features "Ich steh' im Regen" and "Tiefe Sehnsucht" in two beautifully arranged versions by Peter Kreuder and his orchestra with vocals by the ever popular Eric Helgar. Needless to say these recordings are very different from Leander's. Note how Eric Helgar's voice is much more prominent on the "Tiefe Sehnsucht" side. Maybe this is due to the added Wurlitzer organ? Or perhaps this recording was made by a different sound engineer?
