Now that we can see inside the rock, in this 3rd episode, we move forward on the Meteorite ID Flow Chart by learning how to identify a true dark, thin fusion crust, and shiny Nickel Iron metal that looks like steel or chrome, compared to the dark nearly black metallic luster that is often seen in meteorwrongs. We will discuss why grinding a window makes these features much easier to recognize. We will compare real examples, side-by-side, and use them to help us decide, which samples stop here, and which samples still have more to tell us! Some rocks will be ruled out in this step. Others will move forward to a more internal examination. In the next episode, we’ll take a closer look at internal features and structure. We will use what we see and or dont see to help determine what the next questions should be or if the sample is clearly not a meteorite. Be sure to watch the following episodes to find out when and how to prepare to ask experts to look at your stone. Full credit for the creation of this flow chat belongs to these mighty fine folks. https://sites.wustl.edu/meteoritesite...
