Info taken from www.PVJobs.org On September 29th, "Perseverance Rewarded," PVJOBS' Annual Recognition Luncheon, honored two of the thousands of individuals who have successfully changed their lives around through its free career-track job placement: Oscar Flores and Norman Mason. PVJOBS also honored local builders, Brookfield Residential and Fassberg Contracting Corp., who have assisted in giving participants the second chances they need to fulfill their dreams. California Senator Holly J. Mitchell served as our Recognition Luncheon keynote speaker. A member of the legislature since 2010, Mitchell helps create policy for the state and represents nearly one million constitutents in a diverse district which includs Century City, South Los Angeles, Culver City, Cheviot Hills, Downtown L.A. and a portion of Inglewood. "But it's not just about policy, it is also about practice," Mitchell said. "It is about how we encourange employers to hire men and women with records; it is about how we train people to gain useful skills that will make them attractive to the workforce; it is about how we re-think our own bias to have a more complete and nuanced understanding of people who have been touched by the criminal justice system." Fassberg Contracting Corp. and Brookfield were honored as Contractor of the Year and Visionary of the Year, respectively, at the event. "The fact that PVJOBS parters with businesses like Fassberg and Brookfield Residential, who also 'get it,' is a testament to where we need to go," Mitchell said. "Rebuilding a life after release is challenging, but we all benefit when more individuals like Oscar Flores and Norman Mason remain with their families, gt jobs and rejoin our community." Mason's son, Norman Jr., was present at the luncheon and his father referred to him often. "Since I reached out to PVJOBS, I have had a lot of opportunities, Mason said. "I drive down the freeway and I tell my son 'I built that, boy,' and he's like 'Dad, man we need to go up there.' I can tell that he's proud of me." "I'm trying to lead by example, have my son see me get up every morning," Mason said. "This is what a man's supposed to do, get up and provide for your family." "My experience has beeen great," Mason added. "It keeps me out of trouble and keeps a couple of dollars in my pocket."
