Today's 4G networks are being rolled out into a hybrid mix of legacy 2G and 3G networks. To ensure that Diameter networks are able to successfully interconnect with these disparate networks and connect with components from multiple vendors, implementing multiple signalling standards – an Interworking Function (IWF) is deployed. The Squire Technologies SVI-IWF can be deployed as a single component, or as part of the SVI-DSC Diameter Signalling Controller solution. To connect packet networks to legacy 3G networks, the DSC deploys the Interworking Function. These are widely deployed in 4G / 3G networks to enable roaming, where the IWF converts the Diameter signalling to legacy SS7 MAP, CAMEL and USSD. They are also being deployed to enable Wi-Fi offload where the IWF provides DIAMETER to RADIUS inter-op. An IWF is used to integrate new components supporting DIAMETER into legacy networks. In the video, we can see how a state of the art Online Charging System (OCS) that supports DIAMETER, can be interconnected with an existing 3G network over CAMEL / MAP. This allows operators to migrate key components of their network and maximise value in their legacy networks. The SVI_IWF allows Diameter to inter-op over a wide range of industry standards and protocols, allowing seamless interconnect with not only core network components, but also OSS and BSS components such as application servers, billing platforms and sophisticated routing engines. As operators continue to rollout their 4G networks the SVI-IWF provides them peace of mind knowing that this highly flexible product, backed with Squire Technologies signalling expertise will allow them to solve any interconnect challenge they encounter into today's constantly evolving networks.
