The "Death Slide" of Mt. Jefferson: A Winter NH48 Milestone

We tackled one of the most technical-feeling miles of my winter NH48 journey so far. Starting from the Cog Railway base, we navigated up the Cog trail to the Jewell Spur and Jewell Trail to Great Gulf trails to reach the summit of Mt. Jefferson. While the lower forest walk was peaceful, the alpine zone was a completely different beast. Between the side-sloping trails that felt like "death slides" and the -6°F wind chills at the top, this 12-mile trek tested our gear and our nerves. Hike Stats: Distance: 12.0 Miles (GPS Tracked) Elevation Gain: 4,088 Feet Weather: Single digits, -6°F Wind Chill Route: Cog Base - Jewell Spur - Jewell Trail - Great Gulf - Jefferson Loop If you’re watching because you can’t get out to these peaks yourself, I hope this video captures the scale and the "edge of your seat" feeling of the Presidential Range in winter.
