Just outside Edinburgh, a causeway appears from the sea, allowing you to walk right across to this historic and mysterious island. But be warned — the tide comes in fast, and many people have been stranded trying to time it wrong! 🇬🇧 Cramond Island played a vital role during World War II. During the 1940s, the island was used as part of the Firth of Forth’s coastal defence system. It housed anti-shipping and anti-submarine measures including concrete bunkers, gun emplacements, and even an anti-boat boom — some of which can still be seen today. These defences were meant to protect Rosyth Dockyard and nearby ports from potential enemy attacks. The iconic concrete pylons lining the causeway were originally used to support anti-submarine nets and barriers. Over the decades, nature has reclaimed much of the island, but the remnants of war remain eerily intact — a ghost of the past just off the mainland. 📍 Whether you’re here for drone shots, history, or a peaceful coastal walk — Cramond Island offers something unforgettable. Just make sure to check the tide times before crossing! ⸻ 🛑 Tide warning: Always check tide times before visiting — people do get trapped! 📷 Filmed & edited by BootneckAndy 🔔 Subscribe for more Scottish adventures, drone videos, and hidden history.
