Giuseppe Garibaldi was a professional rebel fighter and the main name behind Italian unification. As a marine merchant, Garibaldi was fighting for the idea of a unified Italy. Austria, however, crushed the uprising and sentenced Garibaldi to death, which he avoided by escaping to South America. After becoming a hero there by fighting in Brazil and Uruguay, Garibaldi came back to join the Italian revolution. As a Piedmontese, Garibaldi offered his services to the king of Piedmont-Sardinia. Nonetheless, he was rejected and went to Milan. In the following years, Garibaldi was a part of the revolution which saw Piedmont-Sardinia take over Lombardy and Tuscany. He joined the revolution in Sicily and became the leader of fight against the Neapolitan kingdom. Garibaldi was the dictator of Sicily and took over the rest of the south. After attacking the Papacy twice, he failed as the king didn’t back him up and was imprisoned. Garibaldi retired to his island of Caprera, and although he didn’t take part in Italy’s capture of Rome, he lived to see his dream happen – A unified Italy, “free from the Alps to the Adriatic”.
