Bakkhali - this place is often under-rated and is much less frequented by vistors as compared to Digha, Mandarmoni, Tajpur and so on.. However, one may consider visiting this place since it is not very far off from Kolkata and expenses are quite less. For fish lovers, this place is second to none. Started out journey by Local Train (Namkhan Local, fare is aroung Rs.20) which starts from Sealdah at 0505 hours and reached Namkhana around 0830 hours. Then we took a motorised van to reach ferryghat (Rs.25 per head). From there we crossed the Hatania-Doania river (actually it is a creek) and then local bus to Bakhhali. Places you may go - 1) Bakkhali Beach - the beach is not at all crowded like Digha, but it is beatiful. Here the colour of the sand is white. You may spend time leisurely by sittig on the beach or may consider walking along the sea beach to get the panoromic view of the sea. 2) Bonbibir Mandir - you can reach this temple by simply walking along the sea coast for 10-15 mins. This area, being within the fringes of Sunderbans, used to host many wild animals including Royal Bengal Tiger. The wives of the villagers who used to go to the dense forest for fishing or for honey, used to offer prayers to Bonbibi for the safety of their husbands. 3) Henry's Island - you may take a motorised van to reach this place. It is a totally virgin beach where you will hardly find anybody. However, the place is quite safe. I was feeling like I have reached a place where human civilization has not yet started. You may also consider playing football on this beach, I tell you it is real fun.. 4) Jammu Dwip - this is an island which was under the control of the pirates once. Now it is totally controlled by the Indian Army. Launch services are available. 5) Crocodile Breeding Centre - this place is not very far from Bakkhali beach. You can walk upto this place. One may consider staying inside the Forest Bungalow located inside the crocodile breeding compund. 6) Watch Tower - there is a watch tower located inside the forest where Bonbibi temple is located. If luck favours, you may also get the chance to see deers who normally come to drink water during early morning. 7) Frazerganj - it is a fishing harbour and nothing much to see except the windmills. Those who cannot stand the smell of dry fish, must avoid this place.
