Endometriosis is a common cause of public pain in women. However, roughly 50% of women undergoing wide excision surgery of endometriosis will have some level of ongoing pelvic pain following complete removal of the endometriosis. This is supported in our clinical research over the last 20 years and supported in the scientific body of literature as well. There are many known co-conditions, (pelvic floor spasm and interstitial cystitis are two examples) associated with endometriosis that can contribute to overall pelvic pain, abdominal pain and a fairly long list of systemic or overall body symptoms. Part of providing specialized optimal care to women with endometriosis and pelvic pain includes a multidisciplinary approach that both evaluates and treats these other co-conditions associated with endometriosis and pelvic pain. The umbrella diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome or IBS is common in women with endometriosis and pelvic pain. Celiac disease and non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS) are too previously described conditions that are common in women with endometriosis. A recent study looked at women with endometriosis and pelvic pain. This study was relatively small but found that 90% of women with endometriosis had what is termed nickel allergic contact mucositis (Ni ACM) compared to only 10% in women without endometriosis. This condition results in inflammation of the entire lining of the gastrointestinal tract with associated pain, swelling, diarrhea, constipation, oral ulcers, nausea, vomiting and gastro-esophageal reflux disease and may an underlying cause of IBS. It can also be the cause of extra-intestinal systemic or overall body symptoms including respiratory (rhinitis, asthma, neurological (headache), uro-genital (interstitial cystitis and vulvo-vaginitis) and general disorders (joint and bone pain, chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia. Nickel is included in a new class of xenoestrogens (non-estrogen compounds that bind and activate estrogen receptors) call “metalloestrogens”. The primary source of Nickel is food.
