"Doc" Shauna Springer and Jane Dickerson talk about trauma, especially in the veteran population. Doc Springer started as a regular civilian psychotherapist who was trained to be objective and never get involved with the clients when working with civilian clientele. However, she found that by sharing her empathy more with the veteran population at the VA when working with them and sharing little bits of her life with them, she gained many of her clients' trust and could work with them more fully. Dr. Springer started working within the system of the VA and working with enlistment periods of her clients to stick with them during their 4 year periods and being there for them in their times of need. Dr. Springer helped the VA develop a robust telehealth system as well as a great peer support therapy system. Dr. Springer also helps rebuild healthy attachment patterns after trauma, especially for the veteran community as they transition from active duty to civilian life.
