Chapters Links Original video: • Split Enz - I See Red (Live 1989) Split Enz was a New Zealand rock band that was popular during the late 1970s and early 1980s. It was founded in 1973 by Tim Finn and Phil Judd, and had a variety of other members during its existence. Split Enz had eight songs listed in the APRA Top 100 New Zealand Songs of All Time, more than any other band. Frenzy is their fourth studio album, released on 19 February 1979 on Mushroom Records (AUS/NZ) and A&M Records (UK/US). It was primarily recorded at The Manor Studios, England in November and December 1978, however, the song "I See Red" had already been recorded at Startling Studios (also in England) in July 1978. The album was produced by Mallory Earl, David Tickle, and Split Enz. The album is notable for being the first to feature Neil Finn on lead vocals – though the lyrics to "Give It a Whirl" and both music & lyrics to "Master Plan" were written by his brother Tim. Frenzy ventured even further beyond the band's art rock roots to more of a new wave sound. "I See Red" is a 1978 song written by Tim Finn, from the album Frenzy. It was released in December 1978 by Mushroom Records, as the lead single from the album. It was recorded at Starling Studios, England (Ringo Starr’s studio), in 1978 and produced by David Tickle. The B-side was "Hermit McDermitt" and "Message Boy". "I See Red" was not included on the first 10,000 copies of this album, having not been a part of the same sessions. It was added subsequently on 1 March 1979, where it became the opening track. "I See Red" was the second Split Enz song to achieve a top 20 chart position, peaking at #15 in Australia and #43 in the band's native New Zealand. I see red I respect your wishes You gave me such precious hours What to do without you Squeezed me out of your life Down the drain like molten toothpaste I feel used and spat out Poor old me When my baby's walking down the street I see red, I see red, I see red How could someone wicked walk round free I see red, I see red, I see red I see red, I see red, (hey!) I see red I'm fed up with crying My despair is dying Turning into rage, day by day Green before you met me In the pink when you let me love you I was blue when you let me down Black and blue When my baby's walking down the street I see red, I see red, I see red How could someone wicked walk round free I see red, I see red, I see red I see red, I see red, (hey!) I see red Mmmoh (Ahhhrghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh) Go, go, go, go! I see red, I see red, I see red I see red, I see red, I see red Oooh I see red, (hey!)
