In this video, I challenge the increasingly popular claim that “the boy child is falling behind” and ask a harder, more uncomfortable question: are we really talking about systemic barriers—or are we avoiding accountability? I draw a clear comparison between the historical oppression of women—particularly in the 1800s and 1950s—and the situation many men face today. Women were once legally and socially excluded from education, careers, financial independence, and even basic autonomy. They were denied access, opportunity, and choice. That is what systemic oppression looks like. By contrast, men today largely have access to education, resources, and opportunity, yet we’re seeing a growing narrative that frames underperformance as something being done to them, rather than something that requires personal responsibility and self-reflection. Throughout the video, I don’t attack or label men as lazy. Instead, I call out the hypocrisy in how the conversation is framed. When women were excluded and oppressed, there was no widespread movement of men demanding change on their behalf. Yet today, women are often expected to feel sympathy, step aside, or redirect attention when boys and men struggle—despite the fact that the systems women fought to enter are now open to everyone. I also discuss a recent example from UKZN, where the majority of medical graduates were women, yet public attention quickly shifted away from celebrating that achievement toward the familiar refrain of “boys are falling behind and something must be done.” This moment raises important questions about whose success is allowed to be celebrated, and whose progress is seen as a problem.
