'Gold' Waters in Turkana

For years, it has been a region synonymous with the miseries that nature can visit on a land. It is harshly arid, a difficult to access land plagued by frequent famine, an ever open theater for inter-community killings fuelled by cattle rustling and loyalty to cultural traditions that limit access to and benefits of modern practices such as education and health. But Turkana is quickly discarding its poster image as the forsaken land that has nothing good to offer. Recent discoveries in oil ushered in good tidings that have recently been followed by discovery of large volumes of water. As Willis Raburu recent visit to the area reveals, the latest find of two aquifers is set to radically change the face of Turkana... and for good.
