Halifax's forgotten fortress has been guarding the harbour since 1793. High on the cliffs above Halifax Harbour sits York Redoubt, a fortress that defended the city for more than 200 years. From massive cannons and underground tunnels to a steel anti-submarine net stretched across the harbour mouth during World War Two, this National Historic Site holds some of Nova Scotia's most dramatic military history. German U-boats prowled just offshore. Forty-seven Canadian sailors lost their lives within sight of the harbour entrance. Searchlights swept the dark water every night. And through it all, York Redoubt was the nerve centre holding it all together. Today it's a quiet coastal park that most Haligonians have never explored. This video takes you inside.
