PLOT: Elena has to be married by her 24th birthday for political reasons. Don Alejandro de la Vega is quick to suggest his son Diego to form an alliance. Having no other options in mind, Elena agrees to meet him to discuss the betrothal party. When Elena tells Mateo about it, he is visibly upset and his complains start some doubt about the union in Elena’s mind. But knowing that it is her duty, she still wants to meet Diego. The next day, Mateo is leaving under the pretense of an excursion to not torture himself by being present at the engagement meeting. Elena is surprised by his rash actions and tries to stop him. Mateo is angry with her, trying to tell her that they cannot be a real team anymore when Diego is there. When Elena tells him that she still needs him by her side, he is reluctantly willing to stay. Diego has arrived and he and Elena get along fine, which only worsens Mateo’s jealousy. During magic training he gets closer to Elena than he intended, just as Diego comes in. Elena rushes over in an instant, determined to feel happy about the alliance and not realizing that she is breaking both Mateo’s heart and her own. Diego is not happy with getting married and wants to have his freedom at home. He sees Mateo’s reaction to Elena explaining her duty to her kingdom and connects the dots. He tries to tell his father, but Alejandro still wants the alliance. Overhearing another conversation between Mateo and Elena, Diego is determined to find another way. Naomi backs up Mateo and tries to convince Elena to not go with Diego. Again, Elena puts her duty first. Angry and upset, Mateo tells her that she could have married him if she had asked. Elena still does not realize his emotions, but her own feelings start to stir. Thinking of everything they have gone through, Elena shouts back that she just wanted to protect him and the whole kingdom from a possible war with California. This time, Mateo is willing to go to California with Elena and starts to pack. Elena comes in to thank him for his friendship and Mateo struggles to only call her a friend in return. Her heart being quicker than her mind, Elena rushes to tell him how much she loves him. As her best friend. But the feelings have grown beyond that. At Mateo’s promise to stay by her side, Elena has the sudden realization why he had been acting so strange and that he loved her all along. Meanwhile, Diego has been pulling strings in the background, securing a trade deal with Avalor together with Chancellor Naomi Turner, who turns out to be a fellow matchmaker for her best friends. Alejandro has his political trade alliance; Elena can marry on her 24th birthday and everyone is happy.
