What is life like in Intensive Care for a Trainee Clinical Psychologist? I am in the second year of my DClinPsy, and working in ICU as a psychologist is the most unique environment that I have ever worked in. Many of you who will be thinking about DClinPsy specialist placements or older adult placements may be considering working in a health setting, so I hope this video can give you a little bit of insight into the type of work you will be doing as a trainee clinical psychologist. I opted against doing "a day in the life of a psychologist" type video as every day is so different, so I hope this high-level view gives you a good picture of all the different ways that we can work as psychologists in ICU. HOWEVER! This is not exhaustive, so please hit me up with any questions if you have them :). Health warning! The topic of this video is intensive care, so I will be speaking about very poorly patients, death, medical interventions and high levels of distress. Please look after yourselves and consider leaving this video for another time if these topics feel too raw. ABOUT ME Hello! My name is Miranda, and I am a second year trainee clinical psychologist. I am currently on placement in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Every Sunday at 2pm I post videos about clinical psychology/mental health. These videos are sometimes serious, sometimes less serious but always have the intention of making you smile :) CHAPTERS 0:00 Intro and health warning (please watch) 1:43 Background to working in ICU 4:05 Direct work with patients 7:39 Work with families 11:24 Staff support 14:08 Communication and training 17:18 Final reflections
