PRESENTATION: The core function of assessment requires that the counselor or person doing the assessment: Be knowledgeable about the signs and symptoms of substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health disorders; Skillful and thorough in obtaining, reviewing and evaluating the client’s history; Accurate in making a preliminary diagnosis utilizing the DSM-5. Assessment is not a static moment in the treatment process. It begins in the screening interview and continues throughout treatment. Assessment ultimately defines the client’s treatment plan.
