(21 Oct 2004) 1. Rabbis for Human Rights and Palestinians picking olives, Itamar settlement in background 2. Zoom out from Itamar to olive harvest 3. Set up shot of Mahredin Hassoun, olive picker and activist 4. SOUNDBITE (English) Mahredin Hassoun, olive picker and activist: "The people who weren't able to come and visit their land since five years ago after they were beaten and now they are scared to come to visit their field and now they are able to come with this group, international or Israeli activists who come to help them. It's really an amazing feeling. They feel a lot about that. They feel really happy." 5. Various of picking up olives 6. Set up shot of US peace activist Andy Gutshalk, engineer from Boston 7. SOUNDBITE (English) Andy Gutshalk, engineer from Boston: "As you can see, the settlers are right there (showing settlement in background). Hopefully by them seeing that other people are here, I think by them seeing other Israelis here, it might help some of them understand that, you know, people over that side of the fence are not all bad people and there is no need to hate them just because they are Arab, they are Muslim, they're... I don't know what it is. I don't know why there is such hatred but that we can make a difference for their point of view. But the other thing is for the Palestinians, maybe help them see that there are Israelis that are concerned about this cause. I'm not an Israeli, I'm an international. I'm just trying to help people in general but there are many Israelis with us and hopefully they can see there are many people who support them and understand that they have the right to live, breathe the air that anyone else has the opportunity to do in Israel." 8. More olive picking 9. Establisher of Israeli student, Gal Karniel 10. SOUNDBITE (English) Gal Karniel, Israeli student: "The government allows things that are not supposed to happen in these areas. There is a difference between Jews and Arabs and people are not treated like human beings by my government and that bothers me. I don't think that should be the situation here, that people are killed every day, they have no jobs. They have not enough." 11. Zoom out from settlement to olive harvest 12. Zoom out from Nablus to olive harvest STORYLINE: Palestinian farmers who have been harassed and shot at for trying to harvest olive trees near Nablus were given a hand on Thursday by their Israeli neighbours and human rights activists. The village of Beit Furiq in the West Bank is close to the settlement of Itamar, and to the olive trees that have been a focus of violence between Palestinian farmers and Israeli settlers. Since violence in the region erupted in 2000, farmers say they've become the target of regular harassment by settlers. Human rights groups say some Israelis are trying to drive Palestinians from their own land and that the settlers' militancy is a harbinger of the resistance the Israeli government could face if it tries to uproot Jewish settlements in Gaza or the West Bank. Mahredin Hassoun, one of the activists picking olives on Thursday, said their goal was to help the Palestinian farmers reach their land without fear of attack by settlers. US peace activist Andy Gutshalk, from Boston, said the presence of peace activists and human rights groups might make the settlers think about their actions. "It might help some of them understand that people over that side of the fence are not all bad people and there is no need to hate them just because they are Arab, they are Muslim," Gutshalk said.
