There is a history of 400m firsts for me: First sub 51 in Crystal Palace 1992 running 50.12sec First sub 50 in Middlesbrough 1993 running 48.8sec First sub 48 in Sheffield running 47.53sec First sub 47 in Cork 1995 running 46.9sec and here in the race where Iwan Thomas broke the British record (which still stands today as I write this in 2021) I was off the pace at the back of the race running 45.94sec. I was actually pretty disappointed at this point as it was a frustrating season and I knew I had been in much better shape at the start of the year before my hamstring issue. I remember the national coach Adrian Thomas calling me on the Monday afterwards to congratulate me on breaking 46sec which was a nice touch from him and I remember telling him how unpleased I actually was with it, although I do appreciate it a bit more now. This is the fastest winning time of a race that I have ever been in. I have been in a few sub 45 races but not a fast as this one. A few of my fellow competitors also remember this race for the face I pulled at the start. I looked behind me to the big screen to check I was on and then pulled that face. I got a good giggle from the crowd too and some banter abuse from Iwan when he saw me next after he had watched the race at home. Let's not mention the awful introductions.....Paul Slythe's face at the start tells it all! PS this was the last race of the championship and was the showcase event. 8pm in Birmingham on a Sunday night then getting trapped in the car park trying to get out and another 3 hours or so journey to get home. PPS as we were the last event the warm up area was a desolate place. 8 men (some of us still boys I guess) getting ready to do battle. Each of us warming up away from the other. Each with a coach keeping an eye on us. I have never felt an atmosphere like it of stress mixed with anticipation, fear, dread and sheer nerves. It was actually a pretty tough place to be and I was glad when it was over.
