Traditional Sicilian song from the mid-20th century « Cu ti lu dissi » played here by Jo Brunenberg. The famous recording of the song performed by Rosa Balistreri in 1964 is included in the second part. Fragments are shown from the 1950 film « Il Cammino della Speranza » (The Path of Hope). This film belongs to the Italian neorealism film movement. Federico Fellini co-wrote the script. The movie tells the story of a group of Sicilian miners who, after the closure of the sulphur mine, decide to emigrate to France, and follows their difficult journey full of obstacles and bitterness throughout Italy. Complete movie:    • Il Cammino della Speranza (The Path of Hop...   Rosa Balistreri (21 March 1927 – 20 September 1990) was born in Licata, a town in the province of Agrigento in Sicily and grew up in a very poor family. Her hoarse voice charged with melancholy and strong personality made her a Sicilian icon of the twentieth century. Her father was an alcoholic carpenter and Rosa was forced to do menial jobs, instead of going to school. In 1951, Rosa left her village at the age of 24 for Tuscany, settling in Florence, where she worked as a domestic servant. She started her artistic career at 39, through Dario Fo who made her star in one of his shows. Rosa recorded her first two albums in 1967, and performed at Teatro Carignano in Turin, at Teatro Manzoni in Milan and at Teatro Metastasio in Prato. In 1971, Rosa Balistreri returned after twenty years in Sicily, where she performed until her death. She also embodied, like her friend Amalia Rodrigues, and others, a generation of artists joining the communist ideology. The tone and passion of Rosa Balistreri's songs are an unmistakable mark of Sicilianness. "Cu ti lu dissi " one of the most significant texts of sicilian culture. This poignant love song represents the exact way in which Sicilians love. In a violent, painful and heartbreaking way. A way that consumes them and makes them despair, makes them curse the person they love, but despite everything it is always this love that they need. It is one of the most famous songs in Rosa's repertoire. There are hundreds of recordings of this song sung by Balistreri, especially live, proving how much it was appreciated by the public and by the singer herself. Rosa Balistreri died in Palermo in 1990 at the age of 63.
