The Namib Sand Sea in Namibia - The Oldest Desert in the World. This vast sand desert stretches for some 2 000km along the Atlantic seaboard of South Africa, Namibia and Angola and, with the annual rainfall varying from just 2mm to 200mm per annum, is the only true desert in Southern Africa. The coastline is treacherous and, with more that 1 000 ships having been wrecked here over the years, has earned it the title of the Skeleton Coast. The Namib Sand Sea is almost completely uninhabited by humans and the few life forms that do occur here are specially adapted to these arid conditions.
