Competition is ubiquitous. It appears on television and is a theme throughout our education systems. Have we become complacent about how competition affects our society and is this placing an intolerable pressure on the young? After 17 years (and approx. 78,000 consultations!) looking after university students, Dominique Thompson has set up her own consultancy, supporting universities and other organizations to improve their student support and address the impact modern society may be having upon the mental health of student. Dominique is an award winning GP, and former Director of the University of Bristol Students' Health Service. She is a national student mental health expert and has a particular interest in eating disorders. After 17 years (and approx 78,000 consultations!) looking after university students, Dominique decided to set up her own consultancy, supporting universities and other organisations to improve their student support. She is also currently writing several books to support student mental health, and to help parents of students, at what can be a challenging time. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
