From February 1, 2018 to present, it has been a bad, sad, chaotic time for the FPV community, in online forums and off, all across the nation and world. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, there was an incident involving an FPV quad flight here in Las Vegas, and an incoming airline flight on its landing approach to McCarran Airport. Many of us personally know the pilot that is being accused of the flight, and that's what makes the entire thing difficult because, the pilot in question has stepped forward and stated his innocence online and is not the pilot, and many of us believe that to be true based on his piloting skills and presentation style as compared to the flight presentation in the infamous video. However, he is also the messenger and by having shared the now infamous video which went viral, got reported to the FAA, and hit major news outlets here and abroad, the net is ablaze with anger and in some forums in FaceBook, some exhibiting behavior that reminds me of black mark in US history, the Salem Witch Trials. Many in the community adhere and conform to the rules and regulations imposed on us by the AMA, FAA and various FPV racing leagues, and while negative risk-taking people exist in practically any endeavor, including Government, we are all still disappointed that this event occurred, and we're only just 2 months into the new 2018 year. Anything that flies RC, just does not mix well at all when it comes to real passenger carrying vessels. Major safety concern and hazard. Now, the FAA are investigating with the FBI, with the future of the RC FPV and Drone world in the hands of legislators pending the outcome of the investigation. Who knows what will come out of it, and how it will impact our hobby. So, it's understandable, the furor, anger and resentment over this incident. Many, including me, have invested time and money into the only hobby we have found to be a mixture of therapy, fun, enlightening, adventure, amusement, and some can even claim, spiritual. The most drastic thought that many have in regards to the outcome of this event, is that we will have to get rid of our investment, fearing the Government will outlaw the hobby. I personally do not have that particular end-of-world outlook but, am concerned about it becoming a reality, nonetheless. So, today, I just had to break away from the online forums and head over to Star and Bennett to see who was there. Saw good ole Randy and Andy flying quads at the Star Nursery field, haven't seen them for a while. Then, I headed to the backside of the field to the Old Sam Boyd Soccer field knowing that some of the fellas was there flying their quads. It felt good being around my Vegas FPV brothas. I've been wanting to do a range and performance test on new components for my 4 inch quad. I've got the FrSky XM+ receiver, Lumenier AXII stubby, and powering the rig is Dinogy's new Mega Graphene 4S 1300 Mah 75C lipo. Such a sexy looking lipo in my opinion. Who knew lipos can be sexy to a quad nerd? The packaging shell is Red on the outside with all four cells inside visible and encased in all black. Sexy presentation for sure. The general intention I have for my 4 inch quad is for general park and MultiGP UTT competition racing. So, I'm please with the results from today. I've got more than ample range with the RX, VTX antenna, and the lipos I want to use exclusively for just this build. I've flown this quad with the larger and heavier lipos from CNHL, and it can handle and rip. Today was a nice diversion from the the panic and far from the torch and pitchfork bearing mob that is the general internet and FPV community intent on making sure the pilot who did the airplane video and any who were potentially there during the flight to witness it, as well as those who directly shared the video, are punished to the full extent of the law. We'll see what the outcome is, and hope that our hobby is not impacted by this unfortunate event. Peace and god bless, happy flying.
