The 'Csárdás, a Hungarian folk dance in the Roma style, became hugely popular throughout Europe in the 19th century. Various composers seem to have composed it, but today the most famous is the one by Monti. The work has been arranged for a variety of instruments, but it is most popularly played on the violin. The piece begins in a melancholy Roma minor key, then turns around and continues with a showcase of superb technique, including fast 16th-note spiccato, flageolet and overtone technique. Monti (1868 - 1922) was an Italian-born composer, conductor and violinist. He composed several ballets and operettas, and also published solo mandolin pieces and mandolin instructional books.
