http://www.teachastronomy.com/ Earth was not born with an atmosphere. It formed in the inner solar system close to the Sun so it was warm and a low mass planet with not enough gravity to capture hydrogen and helium that was present in the solar nebula. So the Earth was a rocky planet to start with. During the era of heavy bombardment, icy and hydrogen-rich material was deposited by impacts of comets, meteors, and asteroids. This icy debris built up a large amount of material that would subsequently be part of the Earth's atmosphere. The other major source is outgassing due to geological activity. The combination of deposition from material from the outer solar system and outgassing of gasses bubbling up from the molten interior when the Earth was still plastic in its rocky form have given a large component of the Earth's atmosphere. The primary products of outgassing are water vapor, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and sulfur compounds like hydrogen sulfide and sulfur dioxide. The hydrogen and water vapor that were outgassed, the hydrogen escaped whereas the water vapor condensed to form the oceans of the Earth.
