Yoga Helps Reduce Frequency Of Seizures, Feelings Of Stigma Among Epilepsy Patients: AIIMS Study

Dr. Manjati Tripathy, the head of the Neurology department at AIIMS, highlighted the profound impact of stigma on the quality of life for people with epilepsy and indicated that yoga could serve as a means to alleviate this burden. Published in the medical research journal Neurology, the study focused on individuals with epilepsy in India, with an average age of 30. Stigma was measured based on participants' responses regarding discrimination, feelings of being different, and their perception of contributing to society. Among those identified as experiencing stigma, 160 participants were randomly selected to receive either yoga therapy or 'sham yoga' therapy. Yoga therapy included stretching exercises ('sukshma vyayama'), breathing exercises ('pranayama'), meditation, and positive affirmations. The study revealed that individuals practicing yoga were more likely to perceive a reduction in stigma. Moreover, those engaging in yoga were over four times more likely to experience a more than 50% reduction in seizure frequency after six months compared to those practicing 'sham yoga.'
