On 16 August 1995, ITN filmed Indian security forces patrolling in Srinagar, the capital of Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir. The heavy police presence was a sign of the growing insurgency in the region. The previous month, six western tourists and two local guides had been kidnapped by militants of Harkat-ul-Ansar, a Kashmiri Islamist group demanding the release of its leader, Masood Azhar, whom India had arrested in February 1994. One of the hostages, Hans Christian Ostrø, was beheaded three days before this footage was filmed. Another captive, John Childs, escaped the day after, on 17 August 1995.
