Armor systems are highly engineered products. They are typically comprised of different and complex layers of materials built together to create synergistic effects. Ballistic protective materials in this context are mainly used for personnel and vehicle protection, for which agile movements of the personnel and vehicles are vital for carrying out their missions. Therefore, high protective performance against ballistic impact and lightweight are probably the two most important requirements for an armor material. Several techniques are employed to create advanced armor materials, but this study focuses primarily on fiber- reinforced polymer (FRP) composite armoring. The manufacturing of FRP armor systems taking advantage of its laminated and layered construct would greatly benefit the Armed Forces of the Philippines. FRP’s lightweight property would improve mobility of military (ground, naval, air) units and at the same time improve the performance and efficiency of the various ballistic technologies and products. Its layered and laminated construct would also produce high specific strength enough to provide excellent ballistic performance for military aircrafts. These two aspects alone, excellent ballistic performance and lightweight property, make FRPs a perfect defense material. The current bulletproof vests and other related products are not simply optimized in terms of manufacturing cost and weight, with the best efficiency in terms of durability and strength. The users and manufacturers desire bulletproof products that are lighter, cheaper, and Filipino-friendly (Testimonies from AFP showed that imported bulletproof vests aren’t well-fitted to Filipino physique). Thus, our value proposition for this research project is to establish a competitive advantage in terms of materials research and development for defense applications. This can spearhead the local manufacturing of ballistic defense technologies such as bulletproof shield, plate and vest that can withstand harsh environment and other extreme conditions.
