Part of our Ongoing Series, "Putin's Gamble," Investigating the Global Implications of Russia's Invasion of Ukraine When Russia invaded Ukraine on Febuary 24th, 2022, the world was shocked by the fierce and unwavering resistance of the Ukrainian people. But diving into the last decade of Ukrainian history reveals how misguided the world’s shock was. This is not the first time Ukrainians have put their lives on the front line to combat Russian influence. In 2014, Ukrainian citizens risked assault, kidnapping, and unlawful arrest in protest of the pro-Russia President Viktor Yanukovych. While over 100 civilians died in the Ukrainian “Revolution of Dignity,” their efforts to oust a pro-Russian government were successful. Why then, would Putin invade a country whose people have proven their commitment to independence from Russia? To answer this fundamental question and further elaborate on the longstanding Ukrainian fight for freedom, we hosted the award-winning filmmaker Evgeny Afineevsky, whose Oscar-nominated documentary, Winter on Fire, presents first-hand accounts from Ukrainian protestors during the 2014 Maidan Revolution. Through this work, Afineevsky gained unique perspective into the Ukrainian people and their longstanding fight for independence, which has also prompted him to return to Ukraine, where he is working on a new project. Afineevsky is in conversation with Kevin Goetz, founder and CEO of Screen Engine/ASI. Netflix made Winter on Fire: Ukraine's Fight for Freedom free to watch on YouTube as a show of support for the country and resource for those trying to understand the conflict around the world. Winter on Fire debuted on Netflix in 2015. The documentary received widespread praise: It was nominated for an Academy Award, a Primetime Emmy Award, and other accolades; it also won the People's Choice Award for best documentary at the Toronto International Film Festival.
