Cyclone Alfred to strengthen and hit QLD - 1000th Tropical Weather Bulletin

Today we are celebrating our 1.000th Tropical Weather Bulletin since they first launched in May 2013. Cyclone Alfred has devolved into a remnant low this morning, although still contains some fierce gales particularly in its southern side. Cool sea surface temperatures and massive dry air intrusion has taken its toll on the storm, although some recovery is expected as it starts to turn towards southern Queensland ahead of its projected landfall on Thursday. The rain and wind threat remains relatively unchanged despite the storm's devolution, and warnings are likely to be posted for points south of Brisbane and into New South Wales. However, the storm's motion cannot be ignored and it has moved a little bit further away from land than expected, and may influence its future. Rainfall from the Gold Coast down to Port Macquarie and even towards the Newcastle area could receive in excess of 300mm of rainfall, whilst the forecast for Brisbane has rapidly downtrended, with models projecting the storm to pass a little further south. Elsewhere, Cyclone Honde is also on its way out but is holding up better than Alfred is, to the southeast of Madagascar. The storm is on borrowed time and is likely to transition into an extratropical cyclone in the next 48 hours. New systems could develop in the Indian Ocean later this week into the weekend, with both of them having the opportunity to become hurricane strength storms next week. The western system may strike northern Madagascar, whilst the eastern storm should remain out to sea.
